🌸Preparing for Bloom!

Whitney Tates Art Calls Behind the Scenes In the Studio

Every January marks a spirited kickoff to my artistic year as I prepare submissions for the R.W. Norton Art Gallery's Annual Bloom! Exhibition. Having seen three years of my work grace this esteemed event, I'm eager to craft two new pieces for the upcoming February 1st deadline.

1. Untitled Roots Piece: The first canvas is a continuation of my ongoing exploration of heritage, roots, and the intrinsic connection between humanity and nature. As a work in progress, both in title and form, this piece is a testament to the creative journey, where uncertainty often breeds the most profound art. I find myself at a crossroads, unsure of the direction this piece will take, yet fueled by the excitement of discovery.

2. 'The Narcissist's Crown': The second piece marks a departure from my current style, yet a delightful return to a beloved subject: skulls. Born from the creative process of two other skull pieces, this one already has a title - 'The Narcissist's Crown'. In this intriguing composition, a crown of daffodils, scientifically known as Narcissus, adorns the skull. It's a harmonious blend of the delicate and the macabre, a juxtaposition that sparks curiosity and invites contemplation.

As I navigate these canvases, I invite you to join me on this artistic expedition. The uncertainty of the untitled piece and the bold departure with 'The Narcissist's Crown' encapsulate the essence of artistic exploration — a dance between the known and the unknown. Stay tuned for updates and a closer look at the stories each canvas unfolds.
